Did you know, according to Gartner about 70 per cent of the population in the world is prospected to locate in cities?
The increase in demands with the rapid urbanisation is putting a considerable amount of stress on the present infrastructure due to people moving to urban areas in adequate amount. To fix this issue, related to costs, communication, interaction and services societies around the world are adopting the Internet of Things for making a smart city.
Some potential examples where nearly every aspect of urban living have applications of the Internet of Things are listed below:-
The consumption of water can be totally transformed into cities. From leak detection to data integrity, loses due to inefficiency and also boost productivity by analysing and reducing the time by using smart meters enabled with Wi-Fi. These meters are so designed that they provide information related to consumption and water supply.
With more and more people commuting to urban areas, traffic jam is a big problem to deal with and with the time being it is getting worse day by day. A well-functioned Internet of Things with some eminent features is positioned to make some improvements for this issue. Data can be collected via traffic cameras, mobile phones and road sensors to monitor traffic and to alert drivers beforehand, of accidents and routes mostly congested. Actually, the possibilities are endless and the impact will be substantial.
According to research up to 30 per cent of energy is wasted by the commercial buildings.
To improve sustainability and to save energy with high-class infrastructure buildings IoT technology is there for all. Buildings in smart cities use the Internet of Things for different devices to connect heating, cooling, lighting, and fire safety systems by a central application. Then this central application highlights and monitors areas of high energy drifts.
To tackle with the safety concern in every fast-growing city the officials implement video monitoring systems. These cities have cameras monitoring traffic for accidents and public safety. The system which uses IoT technology, every camera attached to the system acts as a sensor through video analytics software. Then the complete analysis is done through Artificial Intelligence and accordingly video footage is sent to the person concerned for a quick and rapid response to keep the people and resident safe.
In smart cities, the traditional street lights are replaced with smart lighting initiatives which are connected through an LED infrastructure system. These lights last longer as well as are more energy efficient.
For the government to successfully take these cities into the new era of connectivity, they need a platform that can empower the Internet of Things for Smart Cities. This will increase efficiency, improve the services and provide a better living for the residents.
This will alone benefit the system to analyse and aggregate a large amount of information. An efficient Internet of Things for Smart Cities will help the cities make full advantage of the new technology, and improve city life and reducing costs for everyone involved.
